Post Concussive Syndrome

The CDC defines a concussion as, “a type of traumatic brain injury,” which may occur with or without a loss of consciousness. In the United States ~300,000 sports related traumatic brain injuries occur per year.

Post Concussion Care

After sustaining a concussion, you may be wondering if you are ready to safely return to your daily activities or sports. At Willow Grove Physical Therapy, we offer comprehensive post-concussion evaluations, which include:

  • Sub-maximal Treadmill Testing
  • Static and Dynamic Balance Assessments
  • Post Exertional Cognitive Evaluations
  • Screening for abnormal eye movements, as well as decreased attention and memory, which may be indicative of suboptimal brain function
  • High level mobility, agility, coordination, and sport specific measures

Step-Wise Return to Play

We follow the Step-Wise Return to Play Guidelines listed below. These were developed in Zurich as a part of the consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport, which allows athletes to safely return to sports as soon as possible. We work with athletes in steps 2 through 4.

1.  No Activity

2.  Light Aerobic Activity

3.  Sports Specific Exercise

4.  Non contact Training Drills

5.  Full-contact practice

6.  Return to Play
